I think that's an individual exception to be worked out between a student and the staff. For the majority of students, this setup is easier.

But it's hard to make that exception if the staff are going to send out invitations before talking about it to the students first.

I suppose that would be the best way to come up with some sort of compromise.

I get along well enough with my grandparents, but if someone has a good reason to not want their parents or legal guardians here, they shouldn't be forced to deal with it.

I guess. But there's probably at least a few people here at Hogwarts in one or more of those situations I mentioned.
